October is Women's History Month
March 6th and 7th, 2015, UFCW women from across Saskatchewan gathered in Saskatoon to Celebrate International Women’s Day at the Annual UFCW Women’s Conference. On Friday March 6th, we partnered with the NDP Women to present an evening of Storytelling and Cocktails. Over the course of the evening attendees shared stories of their experiences and reasons why they personally have chosen the NDP. It was an inspirational event of sharing where women of diverse backgrounds and lives were able to connect with each other over shared experiences. On Saturday March 7th, we had a full day planned with discussions centered around Mentorship, political activism and awareness. National Representative Lily Olson and Lucy Figueiredo, Representative with UFCW 1400 facilitated the Politics Matter/Women Matter workshop and Sheri Benson, our NDP candidate in the Saskatoon West riding spoke with the group about community building, politics and the importance of being active politically. All of the discussion and events were designed to bring a focused awareness on the upcoming elections, and the need to bring issues specific to women and families to the forefront of the debates. As always UFCW women left the conference educated, invigorated and eager to share their new found knowledge. We look forward to making a difference and having a voice in the upcoming Federal and Provincial elections. #1400women2015

December 6, each year - National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
The following information on this day of remembrance and links are from the Government of Canada website.
Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day coincides with the sad anniversary of the death of fourteen young women who were tragically killed on December 6, 1989 at l'École Polytechnique in Montréal because of their gender.
Beyond commemorating the loss of these fourteen young lives, this day represents a time to pause and reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also a time to have a special thought for all the women and girls who live daily with the threat of violence or who have died as a result of deliberate acts of gender-based violence. Last but not least, it is a day for communities to reflect on concrete actions that each Canadian can take to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
