National Defence Fund
What is the NDF?
The UFCW Canada National Defence Fund is a simple but effective system, established in 1986, and made possible by the solidarity of workers. The fund is an optional, “opt-in” program through the United Food and Commercial Workers in which individual Bargaining Units (rather than an entire local union) are able to vote to join the fund.
Each Bargaining Unit member pays weekly into the fund, and the fund is invested to grow and be able to provide benefits to any participating Bargaining Unit in need.
All decisions are made by a democratic vote. If a Bargaining Unit chooses to join the NDF, it is by a vote of its members who will be making the weekly per-capita contribution.
When a Bargaining Unit votes to join the NDF, there is a minimum six-month waiting period before its members can begin collecting benefits.
The strike pay provided by the fund is in addition to the strike pay per week, or other benefits, that members are already entitled to.
